Rock-n-Roles: Country Rock Bootleg

Make sure you join us this Saturday October 1st at 7:30pm for a wild and raucous ROCK-N-ROLES: COUNTRY ROCK BOOTLEG. We’ve got a tremendous lineup of talented folks making brand new 10 minute plays inspired by some of the greatest Country Rock of all time.

Five songs will be selected randomly from these kick-ass musicians…

rnr-graphic Lucinda Williams * Johnny Cash * Band of Horses
Alabama Shakes * The Lone Bellow
The Avett Brothers * Bonnie Raitt * John Cougar Mellencamp
and more…

From there, it’s all creative chaos and chaotic creativity…Playwrights create overnight, directors shape the work, actors learn their lines, and in a mad dash of insanity, hilarity and daring…new plays are born.

Participants in this year’s event include Christina Ashby, Molly Ballerstein, Christopher Borg, James Comtois, Desmond Dutcher, Siho Ellsmore, Emily Gardner Hall, Bethany Geraghty, Cailín Heffernan, Shelley McPherson, Mateo Moreno, Linda S. Nelson, Jamie Parton, Christina Elise Perry, Kristine M. Reyes, Maria Seigenthaler, Paul Sheehan, Gabby Sherba, Marshall Simon, Mark Souza, Sara Thigpen, Jaime West and Jen Wineman.

Raising money with perks and pies, all to produce a play I love

Hi all…we’ve been talking all week about raising money with our IndieGoGo campaign, and talking about the cool perks each donation can have. We’ve also been trying to incentivize you with the notion of pies in the face of our staff. It’s been wonderful to see how many people are supporting our work.

The work…this brings me back to the reason we are raising money in the first place. Around 2001, I fell head over heels in love. Unabashedly, whole heartedly in love with a new play that came across my desk as I was reading scripts. The play was about two heartbroken women, a mother and a daughter. The man who is husband and father in the play has died in a mountain climbing accident, and each woman is trying to put the pieces of their respective life back together. Not only do they feel the incredible loss of father and husband, they also are left with each other. Mourning, angry, hiding, scared, figuring it out. Loving too much and loving not enough and maybe doing it all wrong and just trying to get thru.

The play was on fire on the page. I couldn’t stop reading it, couldn’t stop carrying it around, couldn’t stop telling people about this amazing story.

That play is WAVING GOODBYE by Jamie Pachino.

After several years of negotiating and a few near misses, Boomerang is so incredibly proud to be presenting the New York Premiere of WAVING GOODBYE this winter, directed by the extraordinary Jordana Williams.

I CANNOT WAIT to begin casting, I CANNOT WAIT to begin preproduction and rehearsals, and I CANNOT WAIT for you to sit in the audience and share in this remarkable play.

This is why we do what we do. Because remarkable plays come into our lives, without ever a plan on how they get here, and we have to do them. We have to. No matter what the cost in dollars, in sleep, in sacrifices. We have to.

Every donor who joins this campaign with us becomes a part of the Waving Goodbye family. Please make a donation of any size.

Cailin Heffernan and John Hurley will join the Boomerang staff

We’re really pleased to announce that Cailin Heffernan and John Hurley will be joining Boomerang as Associate Artistic Directors. Both have a long history with the company, and we’re very excited about working with them on future projects.

Cailin Heffernan made her Boomerang debut in 2003 with the world premiere production of Frank Kuzler’s THE SUBSTANCE OF JOHN. She’s directed 9 full productions in our indoor rep seasons, plus numerous readings and workshops (including her own musical LOVELESS, TEXAS). She’ll be making her Boomerang Shakespeare debut with us in a few months when she directs LOVE’S LABOUR’S LOST in Bryant Park in August, with Jason Loughlin, Sara Thigpen, Carsey Walker Jr, Jared Reinmuth, Timothy Hull and Natalie Roy leading the cast of 16.

John Hurley has directed 3 full productions for us, including last season’s hit LICKSPITTLES, BUTTONHOLERS AND DAMNED PERNICIOUS GO-BETWEENS at TheatreLab. He’s also directed numerous readings and workshops, most recently the development reading of James Comtois’ OFF TRACK. John will be directing the upcoming production of KING KIRBY by Crystal Skillman and Fred Van Lente at the Comic Book Theater Festival at The Brick in June.

Cailin’s position will be Associate Artistic Director for Repertory Theatre, with responsibilities for development and production of plays for both outdoor venues and as part of the indoor rep. John will be the Associate Artistic Director for New Writing, with responsibilities for development of The First Flight New Play Festival and working with new writers. Both will be vital in selecting projects for upcoming indoor and outdoor seasons. And both will have a home to develop their own projects under Boomerang’s metaphorical roof. They will join Artistic Director Tim Errickson, Managing Director Sue Abbott and Director of Special Events Danielle Demisay in rounding out the team.
