Hello everyone! We’ve continuing to share photos of the year-long celebration that is the 2018 First Flight New Play Festival.

This year’s festival is expanded to a year long celebration of new plays. It will include readings and workshops of 20 new works, in honor of our 20th Anniversary. We think this festival is a wonderful way for us to invest in new plays and the people who make them.

If you’d like to support this season, you can make a donation here

In January, we hosted the first four readings of the festival. Check out some pictures below!

The 20th Anniversary Season

Hello everyone!

We kicked off our 20th Anniversary Season this weekend with readings and rehearsals and old friends. It was a great start, and I wanted to fill in some of the details on the rest of the season as we know it.

The readings this weekend were part of First Flight New Play Festival, one of Boomerang’s signature programs. Normally, FF Readings take place over a single weekend and consist of 4-6 readings of new plays. For 2018, we are expanding the festival into a year-long celebration of new plays, featuring 20 new plays in development.

New FF

This weekend we featured the first four of those new plays (THE DYING FALL OF GARY FLETZNER by Adam Kraar; NICHIIWAD by Hal Corley; KNIFEPLAY by Shelley McPherson and PERSEPHONE (A NEW MYTH FOR A HOTTER WORLD) by Kristen Palmer) and we have five more readings coming up March 9th-11th, 2018. The remaining 11 will be presented in September and November, 2018. We think this abundance of new play readings will make an even larger impact on new play development, and continue to build the community that supports new work.

To support these readings, we have two big fundraising events that will get everyone up and dancing! We start on Feb 13th with BARDI GRAS, our own wild mashup of Shakespeare and Mardi Gras style.  Last year’s party featured costume contests, trivia prizes, drink specials and beads beads beads! And this year’s party promises more of the same!

On Monday April 23rd,  we celebrate the man himself, Will Shakespeare on the day he shook off this mortal coil. The celebration will feature songs, dancing, prizes, raffles and collaborations between our team and our theatrical colleagues throughout the city. Did you say “puppets?” Yes, there will be puppets.

And we close out the first half of the 20th Anniversary season with a return to where it all began in 1999…Central Park. Sara Thigpen will direct TWELFTH NIGHT, with performances beginning June 16th on the lawn at 69th Street and Central Park West. Expect music, disguises, true love, and bawdy hilarity.

Twelfth Night announcement

There’s not a thing in this schedule you should miss! So save these dates!

The schedule:
February 13th–Bardi Gras!
March 9th-11th–First Flight 20 Readings
April 23rd–Shakespeare’s Death Day Celebration!
June 16th-July 17th–TWELFTH NIGHT in Central Park
September 2018–First Flight 20 Readings
October 2018–Mainstage production
November 2018–First Flight 20 Readings and Rock-n-Roles

If you wanted to donate to these programs, you could do so right here. And we’d be forever grateful.

Thanks!

The Boomerang Community: Shelley McPherson

As part of our Holiday fundraising campaign, we’ve asked members of Boomerang’s artistic family to write about our company and what makes us unique for them. We hope that you will recognize our distinctive contribution to New York City theatre with a financial gift this holiday season. You can make any size tax-deductible donation here.

But don’t take our word for it…

Shelley McPherson

The team at Boomerang Theatre Company care passionately about the creation and development of new plays.  They back up their mission statement with action and commitment.  A well-respected playwright himself, Tim leads the company with warmth, truth, and a fierce dedication to new work; his energy would seem to suggest that this is Boomerang’s first season, not its 17th.

I’ve had the distinct pleasure of having two of my full-length plays read in the company’s annual First Flight reading series. Both times, my work was richly supported, and the process was especially helpful to me in further developing the two plays.

In addition, I have participated, as a writer, in the past two editions of Boomerang’s Rock-N-Roles , an adrenaline-producing 24 – hour  new play happening wherin the company mixes a potent cocktail of writers, directors, actors , and song prompts , and then shakes, adds garnish, and serves these new plays 24 hours later at a (very fun and festive) fundraising party. Both of the evenings I participated in brought forth a diverse selection of short new plays full of invention, creativity, and the spark of spontaneity.

Further evidence of Boomerang’s imaginative approach to exploring new work came last fall, when, along with half a dozen other writers, I was invited to custom-create a monologue for a donor to perform as part of the company’s fundraising efforts. At the culmination of this project, in January, we gathered to hear this brand new series of specially written monologues, all loosely connected to a theme, read by Boomerang donors.  It was a unique and bonding fundraising concept for writers and donors alike.

With limited resources, extreme enthusiasm, and a dedicated, unflinching intention, Boomerang Theatre Company, against all economic odds, continues to provide a true home for new plays and new ideas; it is a home I proudly call my own.  I encourage you to help Boomerang with its important mission to develop new plays on a budget in NYC.  It is a tough job, but Boomerang is up for the challenge.

Blood Affection
By Vincent Sessa
Directed by Cailin Heffernan
It is a day like no other in the history of the marriage.  Their son dead, and so many other students at the High School shot and killed.  Shuttered in their bedroom the following morning, Karen and Carl dress.  Articles of clothing are considered or rejected, as every article of faith in the marriage itself is mercilessly examined.

Thursday November 20th at 7pm
World Builders
By Johnna Adams
Directed by John Hurley
Whitney and Max would rather not have a relationship. With each other or anyone. The complex fantasy worlds they live in make it unappealing. Unfortunately, they’re in a clinical drug trial to test an experimental drug to cure their schizoid personality disorders. A cure that will kill both their worlds. In the course of the six week drug trial, falling in love becomes . . . less unappealing. But when they have a chance to stop taking the pills– should they let two entire worlds die for the sake of their love? Because that would suck.

Saturday November 22nd at 3pm
No One’s Watching
By Michael Aguirre
Directed by Cat Parker
4 singular tales, one shared bond.  No One’s Watching explores the lonely existence of different generations and classes caught in a repetitive, unfulfilled life.  On an ambitious quest for sex, money, and what they hope is happiness, the stories weave together an exploration of where we fit in the Universe.

Sunday November 23rd at 3pm
In Loco Parentis
By Adam Kraar
Directed by Sarna Lapine
At a co-ed boarding school during the Vietnam War, teachers and students stumble through a minefield of politics, desire, and spiritual yearning.  Caught in the middle of this explosive landscape are Charlie, a young religion teacher who’s a stranger in America, and Edie, a wildly rebellious student Charlie’s determined to rescue from herself.

Sunday November 23rd at 7pm
Warm Roses
By Tim Errickson
Directed by Scott Ebersold
Meg runs a Jersey Shore bed and breakfast left to her by her late husband, with the help of her son Marcus and best friend Joanie. As another summer winds down in the long line of endless summers, Meg’s brother in law and his young graduate assistant come to stay, upsetting the daily balance. Is it better to be alone with a bottle, or in the company of family?

Monday November 24th at 7pm
Mommy Baby
By Shelley McPherson
Kim leaves home, abandoning her family and crashing with her single sister Kate. When Kim picks up where she left off with her fun-loving high school boyfriend, Wayne, both sisters find surprises on the grass-is-greener, bumpy road not taken.  Mommy Baby is a play about having kids, not having kids, and being a kid.

All readings in the Festival are held at New Georges and ART/NY, 520 Eighth Avenue, 3rd floor. Admission is free, with a $5 suggested donation.
